제이홉의 여정에 끝은 없다

루이 비통의 2025 F/W 맨즈 컬렉션 쇼, 조용한 흥분 속에서 피날레가 시작됐을 때 제이홉의 ‘LV Bag’이 장내에 울려 퍼졌다. 퍼렐 윌리엄스와 함께한 이 곡은 어쩐지 머지않아 공개될 제이홉의 새 솔로 앨범에 대한 근사한 예고편처럼도 들렸다. 쇼의 피날레에 있었던 유쾌한 소동의 바통을 이어받아, 제이홉은 전 세계 15개 도시를 순회하는 첫 번째 솔로 월드 투어의 막을 올릴 참이다. 쇼는 계속될 예정이고, 제이홉의 여정에도 끝은 없다.

<W Korea> 비 내리는 파리의 어느 오후에 <더블유>와 촬영을 진행했어요. 조금은 흐린 날씨의 파리, 어디에서 무얼하며 보내는 시간을 좋아해요?
제이홉 낭만의 도시란 말이 괜히 있는 게 아닌 것 같아요. 파리라면 정말 어디든 좋아요. 창문으로 빗물이 흘러내리는 게 보이는 다이닝에서 좋아하는 사람들과 와인 한잔 기울이는 걸 가장 좋아하긴 하지만요.

이번 루이 비통 쇼의 피날레에서 미발매 신곡 ‘LV Bag’이 공개됐어요. 예상치 못한 신곡의 드롭에 모두가 놀랐죠. 게다가 퍼렐 윌리엄스, 돈 톨리버와 협업해 완성한 곡이에요. 이 흥미로운 프로젝트가 어떻게 성사됐는지 묻지 않을 수 없네요.
퍼렐에게서 쇼 음악을 함께 작업하면 어떻겠냐는 얘기를 들었어요. 어린 시절 우상이었고 지금도 너무나 좋아하는 아티스트라 흔쾌히 응했죠. 아직 공식 음원이 발매되지 않았지만 사람들의 기대가 큰 것 같아요. 퍼렐, 돈과 함께 얘기하면서 발매 시점을 정하기도 했어요.

두 사람과 작업하며 나눈 대화 중 기억에 남는 사소한 대화가 있을까요?
제가 녹음을 할 때 퍼렐이 직접 디렉팅했는데 목소리에 에너지가 있다는 얘기를 해줘 뿌듯했습니다(웃음). 돈과는 루이 비통 쇼에서 처음 만났는데, 언제 또 멋진 곡을 함께 작업하자는 얘기를 나눴어요. 개인적으로 제가 좋아하는 루이 비통 백에 대해 말하는 곡이라 의미가 커요. 패션의 완성은 가방이라고 생각하거든요. 특히 루이 비통 백은 어릴 때부터 보고 자라서인지 본능적인 끌림이 있었어요.

2월 28일 서울 공연을 시작으로 전 세계 15개 도시를 순회하는 첫 솔로 월드 투어 ‘Hope On The Stage’가 개막하죠. 대장정을 앞둔 기분은 어때요?
저는 늘 공연에 목마른 사람 같아요. 제 모습을 무대에서 보여주고 싶은 마음이 정말 커요. 지금 단계에선 이런 생각이 들어요. ‘모두를 위한 준비는 끝났다.’ 불태워야죠.

이번 투어에서는 작년 발매한 앨범 <Hope On The Street Vol.1>의 수록곡을 라이브로 선보일 예정이죠. 개인적으로 정규 1집 <Jack In The Box>는 아티스트로서 야심을 보여준 앨범이었다면 <Hope On The Street Vol.1>은 인간 정호석의 내밀한 일기장을 보는 듯한 인상이 있었어요.
제 음악의 베이스는 ‘춤’이에요. 그리고 <Hope On The Street Vol.1>은 바로 이 춤에서 출발한 앨범이었어요. 어려서부터 춤으로 음악을 표현하는 데 익숙했어요. 언젠가 내가 춤으로 느낀 음악의 생동감을 제대로 표현하고 싶은 욕구가 있었어요. 좋은 음악은 사람들을 춤추게 한다는 믿음도 갖고 있었고요. 바로 이런 춤을 음악에 접목한 시도가 이번 앨범이었다고 할 수 있어요.

<Hope On The Street Vol.1>은 방금 말한 춤, 즉 제이홉의 뿌리이자 시작에 대한 앨범이잖아요. 돌이켜 생각했을 때 춤 말고도 제이홉의 뿌리에 영향을 미친 것들이 또 있을까요?
아버지요. 아버지는 무언가를 좋아하면 그것과 관련한 물건을 열정적으로 수집하는 분이세요. 일단 어릴 적 집에 DVD가 엄청나게 많았어요. 다 아버지가 모은 것들이죠. 돌을 모으는 취미도 있으셨고, 지금은 작은 피겨들을 수집하세요. 그런 것들을 보고 자라서인지 나만의 컬렉팅을 만드는 것의 즐거움이나 중요성을 자연스럽게 알게 된 것 같아요.

그럼 바로 지금의 제이홉에게 영향을 미치는 것도 있나요?
음악을 하는 사람이다 보니 음악과 관련한 것들에서 영감을 받곤 해요. 최근에는 그래미 어워즈에서 수상한 도이치의 <Alligator Bites Never Heal>이 제 피를 끓게 하는 앨범이었어요. 도이치의 무대 퍼포먼스나 라이브 콘텐츠는 정말 거의 다 본 것 같아요. 요즘 가장 빠져 있는 아티스트예요. 또 최근 타일러 더 크리에이터의 <Chromakopia> 투어 영상을 보면서도 가슴 뛰는 영감을 받고 있어요. 덕분에 저도 더 멋진 앨범과 공연을 보여드리고 싶은 야망이 생긴 듯한 기분이에요.

“그냥 즐기면서 행복하게 춤추면 조금은 덜 불안해지지 않을까?” 작년 앨범 발매를 기념해 공개한 다큐멘터리에서 이런 말을 했어요. 꼭 춤이 아니더라도 내가 불안하고 흔들릴 때 나 자신을 꽉 잡아 지탱해주는 것이 있을까요?
저를 보는 사람들의 기대감, 시선이 어떤 상황에서든 저를 견고하고 차분하게 만들어주는 것 같아요. 여기엔 당연히 아미 분들도 포함되고요. 결국 그들이 있기에 제가 있는 거니까요.

평소 곡 작업에 대해 언급한 인터뷰를 보면 지극히 자연스럽고 오가닉한 작업 방식을 추구하는 듯해요. 음악을 만드는 과정에서 제이홉이 고수하는 규칙이 있을까요?
일단 내가 음악을 만드는 그 당시 느낀 감정이나 나의 자세를 있는 그대로 담으려고 애쓰는 편이에요. 그래서인지 시간이 지나도 그때그때 만든 제 음악을 애정하게 되는 지점이 생기는 것 같아요. 물론 민망하고 낯간지러울 때도 있지만요(웃음). 그런데 이런 작업 방식이 진정성 있다 느껴지고 음악적 성장의 밑거름이 되는 것 같아요.

그럼 시간이 지날수록 더 손이 가는 곡이 있을까요? 시간이 쌓여 조금은 다르게 들리는 노래도 있기 마련이잖아요.
‘i wonder… (with Jung Kook of BTS)’가 떠오르네요. 이 곡은 유독 자주 들어도 질리지 않아요. 정국이의 피처링도 너무 잘 어우러졌고요. 특히 랩 벌스는 시간이 지날수록 편하게 들리더라고요. 모든 톱 라인을 제가 직접 만들어서 더 의미 있는 곡이기도 해요.

“우리가 어떻게 될지 궁금해. 어떤 모습일지도. 그리고 어떤 삶을 살고 있을지도.” 방금 말한 ‘i wonder… (with Jung Kook of BTS)’에는 이런 의미의 가사가 등장하죠. 가사에서 말하고 있는 아주 먼 훗날, 그때가 되어도 결코 변할 것 같지 않은 나의 모습이 있나요?
음악을 좋아하고 즐기는 정호석, 그리고 방탄소년단의 제이홉. 그거만큼은 정말 변함이 없을 거예요.

작년 전역 직후 짐을 챙겨 훌쩍 미국 LA로 떠났어요. 그곳에서 보낸 모습이 최근 유튜브를 통해 짧게 공개되기도 했고요. 그 당시 제이홉은 무엇을 좇아 LA로 떠난 걸까요?
전역하고 LA로 가겠다는 결심을 오래전부터 해왔어요. 사실 계획대로라면 현지에서 음악 작업도 하고 사람들을 만나 영어 공부도 하는 거였는데 현실적으로 어려운 점이 많았어요. 글쎄요, 내가 좋아하는 문화에 빠르게 스며들어 복귀를 준비하자는 마음이었던 것 같아요. 전 세계에 있는 다양한 프로듀서들과 작업하고 싶다는 생각도 있었고요. 그게 복귀 후 제 음악 방향성과 맞다고 판단했거든요. 아쉬움도 있지만 딱 그 시기에 미국에서 만들 수 있는 재미있는 작업을 할 수 있어서 개인적으론 만족스러워요.

데뷔하고 11년의 시간이 흘렀어요. 그 시간을 돌이켰을 때 제이홉에게 돌파구가 되었던 순간이나 결정은 어느 때였을까요?
2022년 <Jack In The Box>를 발매하고 진행한 많은 프로모션이 큰 돌파구가 됐다고 생각해요. 그때 당시 처음으로 리스닝 파티를 개최했는데, 그 덕분에 여러 장르의 아티스트들과 교류하게 됐어요. 음악 신에 제 존재를 밝힌 순간이었달까요. 지금 돌이켜보면 참 대담했다 싶기도 해요. 다시 생각해봐도 무슨 마음가짐으로 그런 시도를 했는지···. 아직도 그 시절의 저에게 많은 의미로 존경심이 듭니다(웃음). 그리고 야심 차게 결정한 롤라팔루자 공연도 빼놓을 수 없겠죠. 제가 하고 있는 음악에 믿음을 심어준 계기가 됐거든요. 지금 준비 중인 솔로 월드 투어를 있게 해준 뜻깊은 순간이었다고 생각해요. 그때 당시 제가 결정한 많은 프로모션이 여전히 영감을 주고 저를 자극하는 지점이 있는 것 같아요.

머지않아 새로운 앨범도 공개할 참이죠. 새 음악이 세상에 나왔을 때 가장 듣고 싶은 한마디가 있을까요?
‘좀 오래 들을 만한 곡이 나왔구나.’ 이 피드백을 받으면 의미 있을 것 같아요.

“지금 하고 있는 거 잘 해내자.” 2022년 <더블유>와 나눈 인터뷰에서 현재의 꿈에 대해 이렇게 말했어요. 그렇다면 지금 제이홉이 품고 있는 꿈은 무엇일까요?
지금 계획하고 있는 것들을 무엇보다 ‘건강하게’ 잘 해내자. 건강이 우선입니다. 좋은 몸 상태로 준비하고 있는 모든 것들을 성공적으로 마무리할 수 있다면 더 바랄 게 없어요.

2월 18일, 조만간 생일을 맞이하죠? 올해 생일을 보내는 가장 완벽한 방법은 뭐가 있을까요? 제이홉만의 이상적인 시나리오를 들려주세요.
저를 낳아주신 부모님, 가족들과 화목하게 식사를 할 수 있다면 가장 이상적일 것 같아요. 그리고 아미 분들과 생일이야기를 할 수 있으면 더 좋겠죠?

At Louis Vuitton’s 2025 F/W Men’s Collection Show, the finale began in an air of quiet excitement, and J-Hope’s LV Bag echoed throughout the venue. This song was made in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, and it seemed like a fascinating preview of J-Hope’s new solo album to be released soon. Building on the lively finale of the show, J-Hope is about to embark on his first solo world tour to 15 cities around the world. The show will go on, and so will J-Hope’s journey.

<W Korea> You had a photoshoot with W Korea on a rainy afternoon in Paris. Where and what do you do on a slightly cloudy day in Paris?
j-hope Paris is truly the city of romance. I love every place in Paris, but my favorite thing to do in Paris is to enjoy a glass of wine at a dining place with people I love while watching raindrops over the window.

You released your new song, LV Bag, at the finale of the Louis Vuitton Show. Everyone was stunned by the unexpected drop of new song. You even collaborated with Pharrell Williams and Don Toliver for that song. How did you come up with this exciting project?
Pharrell contacted me and asked about working on the show music together. He was my idol since my childhood, and he is still my favorite artist. So, I gladly accepted his offer. The official track hasn’t been released yet, but I can feel great anticipation from people. I also discussed the release timing with Pharrell and Don.

Was there any memorable conversation you had while working with the two artists?
Pharrell personally directed me while I was recording, and he told me that my voice had energy. That made me feel proud (laughs). I first met Don at the Louis Vuitton show, and we talked about working together on a great track someday. This song means a lot to me because it talks about my favorite Louis Vuitton bag. I believe a bag completes an outfit. I’m especially instinctively attracted to Louis Vuitton bags since I’ve been seeing them since childhood.

For your first solo world tour, Hope On The Stage, you will start in Seoul on February 28 and travel to 15 cities around the world. How do you feel ahead of this grand journey?
I always have thirst for being on the stage. I have a strong desire to show myself on stage. At this point, I’m fully prepared for everything. Now it’s time to set the stage on fire.

You’ll be performing tracks from your last year’s album, <Hope On The Street Vol.1>, during the tour. I personally think you showed your artistic ambition in <Jack In The Box> while < Hope On The Street Vol.1> felt more like reading the secret diary of Jung Ho-seok.
My music is based on dance, and <Hope On The Street Vol.1> was an album that began from dance. Since I was young, I have always expressed music through dance. I’ve always had a desire to express the vivid energy of music that I felt through dance. I also believe that good music makes people dance. This album was my attempt to incorporate dance into music.

<Hope On The Street Vol.1> is an album about dance, which is the root and beginning of J-Hope. Looking back, are there other things besides dance that have influenced your root?
My dad. When he falls into something, he passionately collects related items. For example, when I was young, our house was filled with DVDs that my dad collected. He also had a hobby of collecting stones, and he is now collecting small figurines. Since I grew up watching him, I naturally learned the joy and importance of creating my own collection.

Is there something that influences you right now?
Since I’m a musician, I’m often inspired by things related to music. Recently, I was fascinated by Grammy Awards-winning album, <Alligator Bites Never Heal >, by Doechii. I’ve watched most of her stage performances and live content. She is my favorite artist these days. I’m also getting heart-racing inspiration from <Chromakopia> tour videos of Tyler, The Creator. These inspirations grew my ambition to make even better albums and performances.

In the last album’s documentary, you mentioned that “I’d feel less anxious if I could just enjoy and dance happily.” Is there anything that holds you steady when you feel anxious or unstable, besides dance?
The expectations and gazes of people watching me keep me steady and calm, no matter the situation. Of course, those people include ARMY. I exist because they exist.

In previous interviews about your songwriting, you seem to pursue a natural and organic songwriting process. Are there any rules that you strictly stick to when you work on music?
I try to fully capture my emotions and attitude I had at the moment of working on music. That’s why I find myself drawn to the music I made at those moments even after long time. Of course, sometimes it makes me cringe or feel embarrassed (laughs). Still, I feel like this approach is authentic and becomes the foundation for my musical growth.

Is there a song that you find yourself drawn to more over time? Some songs may feel different as time passes.
That would be “i wonder… (with Jung Kook of BTS).” I never get tired of this song no matter how often I hear it. Jung Kook’s featuring also creates a perfect harmony. Especially the rap verse feels more comfortable to listen to over time. The song is even more meaningful, because I created all the top lines myself.

The lyrics “i wonder… (with Jung Kook of BTS)” has lyrics saying, “I wonder how we’ll turn out, what we’ll look like, and what kind of life we’ll be living.” Is there something about yourself that you think will never change in the distant future portrayed in the lyrics?
Jung Ho-seok and BTS J-Hope will love and enjoy music as always. Those two things will never change.

Last year, you left for LA right after getting discharged from the military. You also released YouTube clips of your time in LA. What were you seeking when you left for LA at that time?
I’ve been long planning to go to LA after being discharged. My original plan was to work on music, meet people, and study English there, but they didn’t go as planned. At that time, I wanted to quickly immerse myself in the culture I love and prepare myself for my return. I also wanted to collaborate with diverse producers around the world, because I thought it aligned with music I wanted to pursue after returning. There were some regrets, but I’m personally satisfied because I could do some fun projects that could only be done in the United States at that time.

It has been 11 years since your debut. Looking back on those years, what moment or decision became a breakthrough for you?
I had numerous promotions after releasing <Jack In The Box> in 2022, and these were a huge breakthrough. I held a listening party for the first time, and I had a chance to interact with artists from different genres. That was a moment when I made my presence known in the music scene. Looking back now, it was quite a bold decision. I wonder how I could make such an attempt. I still respect my past self in many ways (laughs). I also want to mention my bold decision to participate in Lollapalooza. This experience strengthened my belief in the music I was doing. Lollapalooza was a meaningful moment that contributed to my solo world tour. The promotions I decided back then still inspire and motivate me today.

You’ll be releasing a new album soon as well. What is the comment you’d most like to hear when your new music gets released?
It would be meaningful to hear feedback, such as “this is a kind of music worth listening for a long time.”

In the interview you had with <W> in 2022, you were asked about your dream, and you answered that you wanted to achieve what you were doing. What’s your dream right now?
My dream is to complete my plans without running my health. Health comes first. I couldn’t ask for more if I could successfully complete everything I’m planning in good condition.

Your birthday is coming up on February 18. What would be the perfect way to spend your birthday this year? Tell us about your ideal scenario.
The most ideal scenario would be having dinner with my parents and family members. It would be even better if I could share my birthday moments with ARMY!
