<W Korea> 요즘 대체로 어떤 날들을 보내고 있나요? 본격적인 활동 전 평화로운 시기일까요, 리더로서 무언가를 앞두고 긴장되는 마음이 클까요?
방찬 바쁜 날들을 보낼 때나 평화로울 때나 생각이 많은 게 제 일상 같습니다. 앞으로 다가올 미래를 생각하면 ‘지금 현재 내가 어떻게 해야 할까’, 혹은 ‘우리 팀한테는 어떤 미래가 다가올까’, ‘뭐가 제일 좋을까’ 같은 생각을 끊임없이 합니다.

5월 10일, 찰리 푸스가 피처링한 싱글 ‘Lose My Breath’가 공개됩니다. 이 책이 나올 때면 이미 꽤 많은 반응이 쌓인 상태겠어요.
스키즈가 해보지 않았던, 보여주지 않았던 색깔을 느껴볼 수 있는 곡입니다. 새로운 시도를 위해 찰리 푸스와 함께 작업하게 되었고요. 저희의 또 다른 모습을 본 ‘스테이’의 반응이 어떨지 너무 궁금해요.

최근 방찬 씨의 머릿속에 가장 크게 자리 잡고 있는 화두는 뭐죠?
워낙 생각이 많은지라 이런저런 화두가 많지만, 지금은 ‘난 역시 멤버들밖에 없다’라는 생각이 가장 강하게 자리 잡고 있어요.

언젠가 리노 씨가 ‘찬이 형이 좀 더 형 자신을 챙겼으면 좋겠다’ 같은 말을 했다면서요. 이타적이고 책임감 강한 사람은 남들 챙기는 데는 익숙해도 오히려 자기 자신을 돌보는 데는 소홀한 경우가 있어요. 자신을 아끼고 챙기기 위해 하는 일이 생겼나요?
최근에 개인 인스타그램 계정을 만들면서 제가 사람들에게 보여주고 싶은 모습을 좀 더 자연스럽게 표현할 수 있게 된 것 같아요. 사람들이 저의 이런저런 모습을 보고 ‘아, 찬이는 이런 감성이구나’, ‘찬이에게 이런 모습도 있구나’ 같은 말을 하게끔 만드는 것을 목표로 삼았습니다. 추가로 무대나 작업 부분에서도 제가 하고자 하는 스타일과 음악을 더 찾아내려고 노력 중이에요. 저라는 사람이 누군지 아직 열심히 공부 중입니다(웃음).

성격상 말하기 좀 쑥스러울 수도 있겠지만, ‘내가 이런 사람이라서 다행이야’ 싶은 점이 하나쯤은 있죠?
너무 어려운 질문입니다. 그저 제일 자신 있는 점은 이거죠. 나는 스트레이 키즈라는 그룹에 속해 있다는 것!

어떤 경우에 상처를 받는 사람인가요?
상처라는 건요, 그걸 어떻게 받아들이느냐에 따라 큰 차이가 나는 것 같거든요. 어떻게 생각하느냐에 따라 상처가 될 수도, 안 될 수도 있는 거니까요. 그래서 웬만하면 상처받지 않으려는 생각을 하고, 또 참으려고 노력하는 편입니다.

“Just Enjoy.” 아버지가 자주 하신 말씀이었다고 들었어요. “그냥 즐겨, 뭐 어때? 왜 그렇게 심각해?” 이런 말을 해주는 부모님은 영화 속에서나 등장하는 줄 알았어요. 당신은 즐길 줄 아는 사람인가요?
저는 부모님을 정말로 존경합니다. 낯선 나라에서 저를 사랑으로 키우면서 세상을 가르쳐주신 부모님이 너무 멋있어요. 늘 감사하게 생각해요. 어떤 상황에서도 즐기기만 하면 상황이 좋게 흘러갈 수 있다는 것을 알려주셨고, 남들에게 행복과 힘을 나누는 모습만 보여주셔서 저도 엄마 아빠의 뒷모습을 보고 여기까지 온 것 같아요. 무대랑 다를 게 없죠? 저희를 바라보는 많은 분께 저희의 음악과 퍼포먼스로 힘을 나눠주고, 무대에 서 있는 저도 그걸 즐기다 보면 모두가 즐거워지지 않을까요. “Just Enjoy”라는 말은 여전히 자주 떠오르지만, 더욱더 잘 떠올리며 살아야 할 것 같습니다.

평소 쓰리라차(그룹 내 프로듀싱 팀인 방찬, 창빈, 한)가 작업할 때의 풍경이 궁금해요. 직장인들에게도 마찬가지인데, 비슷한 사람끼리 만들어내는 팀워크와 서로 다른 캐릭터의 사람끼리 만들어내는 팀워크가 있잖아요. 여러분은 어떤가요?
이제는 정말 한 몸이 된 것 같습니다. 몸은 세 개지만, 마음과 생각은 하나. 서로의 장점과 단점을 너무 잘 이해하는 사이라 작업도 수월하게 해요. 각자의 아이디어를 이해하고 조율하면서 최고의 작업물을 목표로 진심을 다하죠. 데뷔 전부터 착 달라붙어서 지내온 셋이니 더 재밌고 즐겁게 음악 작업을 해요. 창빈이랑 한이가 있어서 너무 다행이라고 생각합니다.

지금까지 발표한 음악 중 거의 다 만들어놓고 발표하기 전에 ‘이거 정말 대박 날 거 같다’라는 감이 크게 온 경우가 있었나요? ‘매니악’이나 ‘특’ 같은 곡이면 마스터링하기 전부터 띵곡의 예감이 강렬했을 듯한데.
어우, 너무 많죠! 타이틀곡뿐 아니라 수록곡의 데모를 듣고도 그런 느낌을 받을 때가 있어요. 거기에 멤버들까지 같은 반응을 보이면, 확신을 갖게 됩니다. 듣기만 해도 설레죠! ‘와 이거 빨리 녹음하고 싶다’, ‘이 노래는 무조건 무대용인데?’ 이런 말을 들으면 자신감이 생겨요. 저는 확신이 있으면 누가 뭐라고 해도 끝까지 밀어붙이는 편입니다.

커리어가 쌓이고 만들어내는 음악도 쌓일수록 뭔가 해소되는 느낌이 드나요, 아직도 배고픈 느낌이 있나요?
배고프다기보다는 아직 요리해보고 싶은 음악이 너무 많습니다! 하지만, 다음에는 어떤 요리를 할지, 사람들이 그 요리를 맛보고 어떤 평을 줄지, 먹고 기분 좋아지고 힘이 날지,그런 고민은 언제나 하게 돼요. 더 좋은 요리를 위해 고민이 많습니다.

스트레이 키즈 음악의 큰 인상은 ‘화려함’입니다. 또 곡의 무드는 대체로 묵직한데, 멜로디나 포인트에서는 톡톡 튀는 면이 있어서 그 조화가 재밌고요. 2022년과 2023년에 네 개의 앨범이 빌보드 200 차트 1위를 달성해봤고, 2023년엔 ‘락(樂)’이 빌보드 핫 100 차트에 진입했죠. 리더인 방찬 씨는 스트레이 키즈의 인기 요인이 뭐라고 보세요?
일단 그렇게 생각해주시는 것만으로도 너무 감사합니다! 저희의 음악을 듣고, 저희를 사랑해주신 많은 분들에게 감사해요. 그런 사랑이 큰 원동력이 됩니다. 그저 그 원동력으로 더 다양한 도전을 하고, 전 세계에 스키즈의 색깔을 알릴 수 있다는 말을 하고 싶어요.

데뷔 7년 차, 그룹의 미래를 위해 멤버들과 종종 어떤 이야기를 나누는지 궁금합니다. 스트레이 키즈라는 이름으로 오래 가기 위해서 뭐가 필요할까요?
그냥 지금까지 해온 것처럼 저희 여덟 명이 잘 뭉치고, 스테이와 함께 앞으로 나아간다면 그 누구도 막지 못할 것 같아요. 스트레이 키즈 그리고 스테이라는 이름은 역사에 새겨질 거라고 믿습니다.

스트레이 키즈라는 그룹은 탄생 배경에 모험적인 데가 있죠. 7년 차 연습생이었던 방찬이 직접 멤버 구성을 했고, 그룹 자체적으로 프로듀싱을 합니다. 연습생 시절을 거쳐 지금까지 쌓은 여러 경험을 통해, 방찬 씨에게 남아 있는 중요한 교훈은 뭔가요?
항상 감사하자. 그리고 기회는 갑자기 튀어나오게 되어 있으니, 잡을 준비를 하자.

현실 가능성과 상관없이 언젠가 정말 시도해보고픈, 상상하는 꿈의 무대가 있나요?
무대라는 게 참 다양한 종류가 있잖아요? 저 진짜 장난 아니고 진심인데, 달에서 공연하는 일도 상상해봤습니다(웃음).

올해 안에 지금까지 투어 중 가장 큰 규모의 월드 투어를 시작한다고 들었어요. ‘스포’ 좀 해주실래요?
네, 짚어주신 대로 역대급일 거라 예상합니다. 지금까지도 다양한 무대를 보여드렸지만, 저희가 준비 중인 투어는 스테이가 상상하는 것 이상일 거예요. 처음 보는 모습, 처음 보는 무대, 멋지게 부활한 스키즈를 보여드리겠습니다.

<W Korea> : Who are you doing these days? Are you spending a peaceful time before your activity, or are you feeling more nervous about upcoming events as a leader?
Bang Chan My recent days have been busy and peaceful at the same time, but they were always full of thoughts. Whenever I think about the future, I constantly think about “what should I do right now?’, ‘what will happen to our team in the future?’, or ‘what would be the best?’.

Your single album, “Lose My Breath,” featuring Charlie Puth will be released on May 10. By the time this volume gets published, there will already be so many reactions.
“Lose My Breath” is a song with new colors that Stray Kids never tried before. We collaborated with Charlie Puth for our new attempt, and I can’t wait to see how STAY will react to see another side of us.

What occupies your mind the most recently?
I am a person of many thoughts, and there are so many things that occupy your mind. The strongest thought for now is, ‘Our members are the best.’

Lee Know once said, “I wish Bang Chan would take better care of himself.” Altruistic people with strong responsibility often care about others but neglect themselves. What is something you do to take care of yourself?
I recently made a personal Instagram account, and it helped me express myself to others more naturally. My goal is to show different sides of myself and think ‘I didn’t know Bang Chan had such thoughts,’ or ‘I have never seen that side of him.’ I am also trying to find the styles and music in terms of stage performance and music. So, I am still studying to figure out who I am (laughs).

It might be a bit embarrassing to say, but you do have at least one point that you are glad to be who you are?
This is a tough question to answer. Still, I have one thing that I am proud of. I am a part of Stray Kids!

What makes you feel hurt?
I personally think feeling can be different depending on how you take it. In other words, you may feel hurt or not depending on how you think about it. I try not to feel hurt as much as possible, and I try my best to endure things.

I heard that your father often told you to “just enjoy.” I thought only parents from movies would say “Just enjoy. It’s not a big deal. Don’t be so serious.” Are you a type of person who knows how to enjoy things?
I really respect my parents, and they are amazing parents who raised me with love and taught me about the world in a foreign country. I always feel thankful to them. They taught me that any situation can get better by enjoying it, and they always shared happiness and power with others. I watched and followed my parents, and that’s who I became who I am. It’s not that different from the stages. We share power with fans and supporters with our music and performance. I believe everyone will eventually enjoy as long as I enjoy the stages. The phrase, “just enjoy,” still comes to my mind often, and I will keep telling it to myself more often.

I am curious about it’s like to be working as 3RACHA (producing team of Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han). For example, teamwork of office workers can be created by people with similar or different characteristics. What about you guys?
We move and think as one body. We have three bodies with one mind and one thought. We work smoothly because we understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses so well. We understand and coordinate each other’s idea to come up with the best result. We have been so close to each other even before our debut, and we enjoy working together with each other. I am so lucky to be with Changbin and Han.

Among the songs you released so far, was there any track that you strongly thought it will be a huge hit just before releasing it” For example, did you have a strong feeling about songs like “Maniac” or “S-Class”?
Oh, there were so many songs that I had a strong feeling about. Actually, I get that feeling from not only title tracks but also from track demos. I even get more confident when our members share the same reaction. I get excited just by listening to the song! I grow confident when people say “I can’t wait to record this song” or “this song is definitely for the stage performance.” Whenever I have confidence, I push it forward no matter what others say.

As you careers build up and release more songs, do you feel a sense of release or do you still feel hungry?
I’d say there are still so many types of music I want to cook! But I constantly think about what to cook next, how people will react after tasting it, and whether people would feel better and gain energy from it. I am concerned a lot about how to make better dishes.

A “brilliance” is the strongest impression from the songs of Stray Kids. The song vibes are mostly heavy but their melodies and points still draw attention. Such a harmony feels really interesting. In 2022 and 2023, your four albums claimed the top spot on the U.S Billboard 200 albums chart. In 2023, “LALALA” has entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart. As a leader of Stray Kids, what do you think is the reason behind your team’s popularity?
I want to mention that I am so thankful for thinking in that way! I also feel thankful for people who became our fans after listening to our music. Their love huge motivation for me. I also want to say that I could challenge more and spread the colors of Stray Kids throughout the whole world with such a motivation.

Your group debuted 7 years ago, and I am curious about things you guys discuss the future of Stray Kids. What would be necessary to stay longer as Stray Kids?
No one can stop us as long as our eight members always stick together and keep moving forward with STAY just like we always have been. I strongly believe that Stray Kids and STAY will mark a milestone in the history.

The birth of Stray Kids was somewhat adventurous. At that time, you had been a trainee for seven years and gathered members to produce an idol group on your own. What is an important lesson you learned from the past experiences since your trainee years?
I learned to be always thankful and be ready to seize the opportunities because they are always unexpectable.

Do you have a dream stage that you’d love to try someday, regardless of its feasibility?
As you know, there are many types of stages. I even imagined performing on the moon. I am not joking, and I am serious (laughs).

I heard that you will be starting the biggest world tour in this year. Can you share us some spoilers?
As you mentioned, this year’s world tour will be bigger than ever. We have shown various stages, but this year’s world tour is going to be beyond imagination. I promise to show the reborn of Stray Kids with new sides and new performances.
