<W Korea> 요즘 어떤 날들을 보내고 있나요?
승민 요새는 좀 무던하고 차분한 마음가짐을 갖고 지내는 것 같아요! 여러 가지를 준비하느라 분주한 편이지만, 매일 아침 눈뜰 때마다 감사함을 되새기고 있습니다.

‘Lose My Breath’는 처연한 선율과 감성이 두드러지는 곡이더군요. 보컬의 역할이 중요했겠어요.
스트레이 키즈가 거의 처음으로 완전 팝 장르를 부른 건데요. 요즘 음악 시장에서 추구하는 트렌디함을 담은 동시에 멜로디가 돋보이는 저희의 목소리를 내내 들려드릴 수 있어서, 보컬인 저는 이 프로젝트를 준비하면서 무척 좋았어요.

드라마 <야한 사진관>에 흐르는 감미로운 목소리의 주인공이 승민 씨였어요. ‘우리 만남은 우연이었을까요’라는 OST 잘 들었습니다. 혹시 보컬리스트로서는 최근 어떤 화두를 품고 있나요?
우선, 노래 들어주셔서 감사합니다. 요즘 저는 시간이 지남에 따라 어딘가 깊어진 제 목소리를 받아들이고, 여러 가지로 연구 중입니다. 호흡을 더 깊게 내려서 깊은 소리를 낼 건지, 호흡을 얕게 써서 빠르게 리듬을 가져갈 건지 등을요. 곡 분위기에 맞춰 제 본래 목소리를 잃지 않는 톤 안에서 자유롭게, 또 맛있게 부르자는 생각으로 제 포지션에 임하고 있습니다. 점차 깊어지는 제 목소리를 잘 들어주시면 감사하겠어요.

‘노래를 정말 잘한다’는 건 뭘 말하는 걸까요? 기술적인 것, 감정적인 것, 표현력, 그만의 개성, 뭐 여러 가지가 있잖아요.
전달력이 좋은 가수도 있고, 미친 가창력의 가수도 있고, 누가 감히 따라 할 수 없는 개성을 보유한 가수도 있고. 그런데 ‘노래를 잘하는 사람’이라면 어느 누가 그 사람의 노래를 듣든 그 사실을 알아차리게 만드는 것 같아요. 첫 소절을 시작할 때 ‘나는 어떤 노래를 부르고 있는 사람인가’를 청자들에게 바로 가닿게 하는 것. 이걸 말로 정확하게 표현하기는 어렵지만요. 저는 아직도 저의 무기를 계속 찾아가는 중입니다.

승민 씨가 정말 좋아하는 보컬리스트에 대해 얘기해주세요. 그 보컬의 어떤 면이 그렇게 훌륭한가요?
태양 선배님과 도경수 선배님을 좋아해요. 어딘가 단단하면서 듣는 사람의 가슴에 박히는, 금세 와닿는 감성을 가지고 있지
만, 그러면서도 남이 절대 쉽게 따라 할 수 없는 소리를 가지고 계신다고 할까요. 그런 부분들을 저도 추구하고 있기에 대단하다고 생각해요.

승민 씨가 어릴 적 누군가의 앞에서 노래 불렀을 때 작은 환호를 받은 그 최초의 기억에 대해 듣고 싶네요.
학창 시절에 친구들 앞에서 흥얼거리거나 같이 노래방에 가면, 목소리 좋고 특이하다는 말은 좀 들어봤어요. 하지만 저는
짧은 연습생 기간을 거치고 데뷔 이후 죽기 살기로 해서 여기까지 온 케이스라, 과거에 내가 그렇게 잘한다고 느낀 기억은 많지 않네요.

승민이라는 사람을 표현할 수 있는 단어 세 개를 꼽아본다면요? 참고로 저는 이런 댓글을 본 적이 있습니다. ‘김
승민이라 쓰고, 광기라고 읽는다.’ 미성의 보컬로만 알고 있다가 깜짝 놀랐네요.
꾸준함, 차분함, 때로는 광기.

어떤 경우에 따분함을 느끼세요?
저는 멤버들과 재밌게 보내는 순간이 많아서, 혼자서도 따분함을 별로 안 느끼는 편이긴 해요!

멤버들의 면면을 보면 자신을 그렇게 내세우지 않는데도 이상하게 자부심이 느껴져요. 여러분에게는 어떤 견고함이 있는 것 같아요. ‘우리는 스스로 태어나, 스스로의 음악을 한다’는 전제가 그런 기운을 만들어내는 걸까 짐작해봅니다. 승민 씨는 스트레이 키즈의 멤버로서 또는 아티스트로서 어떤 자부심이 있죠?
어디에 가든 멤버들과 함께라서 든든하고, 또 뿌듯하고, 여덟 명이 진심으로 뭉칠 수 있기 때문에 자부심이 있습니다. 저희는 정말 진심으로 이 생활을 좋아해요. 그렇기에 많은 것들을 버티고 이겨내고 활동하는 것 같습니다. 저희끼리 똘똘 뭉쳐서 만들어내는 음악과 무대로 많은 분들의 공감을 끌어낼 수 있다는 점에 자부심이 생겨요. 그 점을 감사하게 생각합니다.

지난 시간을 돌이켜봤을 때 ‘우리가 이젠 정말 인정받았구나’, ‘우리의 진심과 노력으로 이런 날이 왔구나’라고 유독
뿌듯해한 때가 있나요?
정말 많은 일들이 있는데요. 작년에 있었던 일 중에서 꼽아보자면 VMA에서 상을 받고 ‘특’을 부른 것. 언제 또 할 수 있는 경험일까 싶어요. 계속 그런 순간을 만들어내서 팬들에게 선물하자는 생각을 해봅니다.

롤라팔루자 파리 헤드라이너로 대형 페스티벌 무대를 치른 경험은 어땠나요? 공연을 사방이 뚫린 야외에서 하느냐, 스타디움에서 하느냐, 혹은 실내에서 하느냐에 따라 공연자가 느끼는 컨디션이 다르잖아요. 무대에 선 사람만이 아는 예민한 지점들이 궁금해요.
컨디션을 생각하면, 저는 바깥 공기 마시면서 노래할 수 있는 야외 무대가 제일 좋았던 것 같아요. 롤라팔루자는 밤 공연이라 적당히 시원하기도 했고. 저희가 공연할 때 화약 같은 무대 장치 들을 많이 사용하는 편인데, 그 잔해를 지속적으로 마시다 보면 목소리가 갈릴 때도 있거든요. 그런데 야외 공연장이면 그런 잔해도 다 날아가니까, 깨끗한 목소리를 마이크에 담을 수 있어서 좋아요. 올해 많은 활동과 공연을 하려고 준비 중이에요. 차츰 하나씩 공개할 생각에 설렙니다!

데뷔 7년 차입니다. 그 시간을 거쳐 지금 남아 있는 교훈은 뭔가요?
무엇보다 본업 잘하자. 기분이 태도가 되게 하지 말자. 주변에서 우리를 도와주는 많은 분들에 대한 감사함을 잃지 말자. 이런 생각을 하며 지냅니다.

음악과 팬을 제외하면 승민 씨에게 남는 중요한 것은 뭐죠?
음… 팬들과 음악을 제외하면… 글쎄요, 저한테는 가족, 친구, 스키지기밖에 없겠네요.

<W Korea> How are you doing these days?
Seungmin I try to spend an ordinary day with calm mindset. We are currently busy for a lot of things, but I remind myself to be grateful every time I wake up in the morning.

“Lose My Breath” is a song with sorrowful melody and vibes. The vocals must be important in that song.
It was almost the first time for Stray Kids to sing a pop genre. The song reflects the latest music market trends, and we could express our voices along the melody line. As a vocalist, I was really happy throughout the project.

You were featured in <The Midnight Studio> with your sweet voice. “Was Our Meeting A Coincidence” was such a great song. What currently occupies your mind as a vocalist?
First of all, thank you for listening to my song. As I voice got somehow deeper over time, I am getting used to my new voice and experimenting my voice. For example, I can use longer breath to make a deeper voice or use shallow breath for a faster rhythm. My goal is to sing freely and express my voice stylishly while keeping my original voice. I hope people would enjoy my deepening voice.

What does it mean to be good at singing? Is it related to singing technique, emotion, expression, or uniqueness?
There are singers with good delivery skills, outstanding singing skills, or unique trait that no one else can imitate. But “good singers” make everyone recognize them as soon as hearing their song. In other words, good singers make the listeners feel “who they are” from the first line. Although it is hard to express in words, I am still looking for my own strength.

Could you share your favorite vocalists? What makes them your favorite singer?
Taeyang and D.O. are my favorite vocalists. They have a solid voice that touches the hearts and quickly impresses the listeners. Still, their voices are so unique that no one can imitate. I admire them because I am personally seeking to have these traits.

Could you share the first experience of singing in front of people and receiving applause in your childhood?
When hummed in front of friends or sang at karaoke during school days, my friends often told me that I have a nice and unique voice. Still, I didn’t think my voice was particularly good because I spent a short time as a trainee and devoted whole life for singing since debut.

Could you pick three words that describe yourself? I read a comment saying that “Seungmin is full of madness.” I actually thought of you as a sweet vocalist.
Steadiness, calmness, and sometimes madness.

When do you feel bored?
I usually enjoy time with members, and I don’t feel that bored even when I am alone!

When I look at Stray Kids members, I somehow feel their pride even if they don’t intend to show it. I think you guys have some kind of solidity. I guess such prides come from your phrase, “we are born from ourselves, and we make our own music.” What prides do you have as a member of Stray Kids or as an artist?
I feel confident because I am with our members anywhere I go. I also have prides because our 8 members are all united with true hearts. I love my life now, and that’s how I am enduring everything and continuing activities. I feel thankful, and I take prides for resonating with so many people with music and stages we created.

Are there any moments you rewarded, thinking “our group is finally recognized” and “the day has finally come with our true heart and efforts’?
There have been so many events. We won an award from VMA and sang “S-Class” last year, and it was a once in a lifetime experience. I hope to keep creating such moments as a gift for our fans.

How was it like to headline Lollapalooza Paris? The performers feel different conditions depending on outdoor stage, stadium stage, and indoor stage. Could you share the points you especially paid attention on the stage?
I had the best condition during the outdoor stage because I can sing while breathing in fresh air. Lollapalooza also felt cool enough at night. We often use stage effects, such as firework effect, and my voice sometimes cracks after inhaling the chemical debris from those effects. Since these debris disperse at outdoor stages, I can sing in a clearer voice. We are preparing for various activities and concerts this year, and I can’t wait to release them one by one!

As a singer who debuted 7 years ago, what is the important lesson you learned?
To be good at my main job, don’t let my mood affect my attitude, and don’t forget the thankfulness to people supporting us.

Hmm… Beside fans and music… Well, I have only family, friends, and SKIJIGI, then.
