<W Korea> 우리 화보 때 헤어스타일 어땠어요? 5 대 5 가르마로 쫙 붙인 스타일, 그거 아무나 어울리기 힘들잖아요. 현진 씨가 그 스타일을 하고 있으니까 너무 시크해서 보는 제가 다 쾌감이 생기더군요.
현진 아주 새로웠고, 무드와 어울리는 스타일이어서 더 몰입해서 촬영할 수 있었습니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 헤어스타일이기도 합니다(웃음).

요즘 생각이 많은 시기인가요, 어때요?
평화로워지기 위해 생각이라는 걸 버리다 보니, 이제는 주워 담을 수조차 없게끔 잃어버리는 것 같아서 고민이기도 합니다(웃음). 잃어가는 제 모든 감성을 다시 새롭게 찾아보려 해요. 그리고 중요한 컴백이 남아 있어서 설레고 떨리는 마음으로 준비 중이에요!

황현진을 설명해주는 단어 세 개를 꼽아본다면요? 예술이란 결국 ‘나는 누구인가’에서부터 출발하는 일이니까요.
사랑, 갈증, 자유.

스스로 생각하기에도 마음에 드는 자신의 기질은 뭐죠?
무언가에 잘 몰입할 수 있다는 점이 가장 마음에 듭니다. 제가 무대에서 설정해놓은 캐릭터를 잘 소화했다고 느낄 때 행복감을 느껴요.

이번 화보로 만나기 몇 달 전 <더블유>와 유튜브 콘텐츠 촬영을 할 때, ‘현대미술에 대해 이것저것 공부하고 있다’고 언급하셨죠. <더블유>가 아트를 정성 들여 다루는 매거진이랍니다. 현진 씨가 좋아하는 작가나 끌리는 작품이 궁금하네요.
그 유튜브 촬영을 할 때 현대미술에 대해 이것저것 알아보는 시기이긴 했지만, 결국 가장 제 눈을 사로잡는 건 역시나 캔버스 안에 담긴 세상이더라고요. 마크 로스코의 세상에 흠뻑 빠졌습니다. 어떻게 그런 단순한 모양과 색에 깊은 감동을 담을까. 볼 때마다 새로워요. 저도 캔버스에 그림 그리는 일을 계속해야지 다짐해요.

글도 쓰고, 사진 찍는 일도 즐긴다고 익히 들었어요. 다양한 창작에 대한 관심은 무언가를 쏟아내고 싶어서 저절로 우러나오는 건가요? 아니면 흥미가 생기니 더 알아가고 싶다는 욕구에서 비롯되는 건가요?
솔직히 말하면, 저는 무언가 만들어가지 않으면 도태되는 듯한 기분이 들어요. 내 것이 없는 세상에서 그것들이 유일하게 내 편인 느낌. 이제는 그런 내 것이 아니면 애정이 좀처럼 피어나지 않습니다.

음악을 둘러싼 일을 할 때와 그림 그릴 때의 나. 각각의 행위에 집중할 때 느끼는 감흥이나 태도는 어떻게 다른 것 같아요?
음악을 할 때는 조금은 계산적일 필요가 있다고 생각해요. 반면에 그림을 그릴 때는 정말 자유롭고 한계가 없는 기분이에요. 음악이 어쩌면 조금 공적인 느낌이라면, 그림은 정말 사적이고 비밀이 많은 느낌이죠.

작년 11월에 낸 앨범 <樂-Star>의 ‘가려줘’가 앨범에 수록된 현진 씨의 첫 자작곡이라면서요. 녹음 부스 바깥에서 멤버들에게 디렉션을 주면서 한 곡을 완성해가는 경험은 어땠어요?
디렉션을 주고받는 경험은 이전에도 가이드 음원을 만들거나 할 때 해본 적이 있어요. 그 점보다는 사람들이 이 노래를 좋아해주시는 점이 고마웠습니다. 아끼는 노래였는데, 멤버들도 잘 불러줘서 좋았죠.

현진 씨가 생각하는 진짜 멋진 것, 멋진 태도, 멋진 사람이 궁금합니다. ‘멋’이란 어떤 특징에서 비롯되는 걸까요?
눈치 안 보고 자유를 끊임없이 갈구하는 사람, 그리고 자신을 사랑하는 사람. 멋은 자존감에서 흘러나오는 여유인 것 같습니다.

질투심을 느낄 정도로 탐나는 재능이나 무엇을 가진 인물은 어떤 유형인가요?
가끔은 아무 생각 없는 사람이 부러울 때가 있어요. 저는 그렇게는 안 될 걸 알아서 부러운 것 같아요.

승부욕이 있다고 말하는 모습을 봤어요. 다 ‘이겨 먹고’ 싶고, 잘 해내고 싶은 마음이 큰 사람은 그 마음을 연료로 자가 발전하기 좋죠. 그렇게 데뷔 7년 차를 맞은 시점이면, 현재 어떤 만족감과 어떤 갈증이 남아 있을까요?

주변에 멤버들과 팬들이 있다는 점에서 ‘참 좋은 인생을 살고 있구나’ 느낍니다. 그리고 스트레이 키즈로서 더 많은 공연과 더 잘하는 모습을 보여주고 싶어요. 앞으로도 많은 곳에서 무대를 하고 싶습니다.

은하수처럼 빛을 내는 수많은 관중과 화려한 조명 속에서 공연을 마치고 집으로 가면, 잠들기 전까지 드는 생각과 상태는 대체로 어떠한가요? 눈앞에 계속 뭐가 번쩍거리고 귓가에 소리가 울릴 거 같은데 말이죠.

실제로 귓가에 소리가 계속 울립니다. 씻고 누우면 가끔은 외롭기도 하고 허무하다는 생각도 들지만, 예쁜 눈으로 바라봐주는 스테이가 제일 많이 기억나고, ‘앞으로도 계속 무대에 서야겠다’ 같은 다짐을 해버리고 그럽니다.

올해 스트레이 키즈는 지금까지 했던 투어보다 여러모로 규모가 큰 월드 투어를 시작해요. 마음가짐이 어떤가요?
규모가 커지는 만큼 더 다양한 모습을 보여주고 싶고, 후회 남지 않게끔 다 쏟아낼 그 순간들을 기록하고 싶습니다. 무대를 향한 갈증을 다 해소하고, 스테이와 함께 신나게 놀 거예요. 얼른 보여드리고 싶네요(웃음).

꿈처럼 한 달의 휴가가 주어진다면 뭘 하며 시간을 보내실래요?
지도랑 MP3만 들고 아무도 모르게 여행을 떠나고 싶습니다. 배낭 메고 이곳저곳 돌아다녀볼래요.

<W Korea> How did you like your hairstyle for editorial photography? Middle part hairstyle is hard to pull off. I was thrilled to see you because you looked so chic in your middle part hairstyle.
Hyunjin It felt refreshing, and I could immerse deeper into editorial shooting because it suited my style. Middle part hairstyle is actually my favorite hairstyle (laughs).

Do you think a lot these days?
I cleared my mind to stay peaceful but now I feel like I am losing them so much that I can’t even pick them up (laughs). These days, I am trying to find my thoughts I lost so far. I am also excited and nervous for the upcoming comeback!

Could you pick three words that describe yourself? Art eventually starts from “who you are.”
Love, thirst, and freedom.

What is the trait you like about yourself?
I love myself when I immerse myself deeply into something. I feel happy when I successfully express the character as intended on the stage.

When you met <W Korea> a few months ago for YouTube before this editorial shooting, you said you were studying a contemporary art. <W Korea> is a magazine that carefully covers arts. Could you share your favorite artists or artworks?
At that time, I was trying to learn more about the contemporary art. However, what caught my eyes was the world inside the canvas. I fell in love with the world of Mark Rothko. Every time I see his artworks, I wonder how simple shapes and colors can deeply impress people. His artworks inspired me to continue painting on canvas.

I heard that you enjoy writing and taking photos. Are you interested in creative works because you have an idea you want to express? Or does it come from the desire to explore the areas you are interested in?
To be honest, I feel like I am falling behind when I don’t create something. The world is full of things that I don’t own, and my creative works are the only things on my side. Now, it’s hard for me to cherish things that aren’t mine.

You are a musician and a painter at the same time. How does your mindset or attitude change when you focus on music and painting?
I try to be more calculative when I work on music. On the other hand, I feel free and limitless when I paint. Music feels a bit more official while music feels much more private with many secrets.

“Cover Me” in <樂-Star> released on last November was the first track you made. How as it like to make a track by directing the members outside the recording booth?
I already had experience of exchanging directions when I worked on the guide tracks. I rather felt thankful because people liked the song I made. I have been cherishing that song and our members sang it really well.

How would you describe cool thing, cool attitude, and cool person? What makes something feel cool?
I think a cool person is someone who constantly seeks freedom without getting bothered, someone who loves himself or herself, and someone who has confidence.

What kind of person has talents or something you get jealous about?
I sometimes envy people who don’t have any thought in mind. I envy them because I know that I can’t be like them.

You mentioned that you are a competitive person. People who are motivated to win and perform better develop themselves with such motivation. As you celebrate 7th anniversary this year, what satisfactions and desires do you have now?
I am blessed to live a good life surrounded by our members and fans. As a member of Stray Kids, I want to reach out to more stages and perform better. I also want to continue our activities in more places.

What do you think before you fall asleep as you return home after finishing stages with galaxy of crowds and brilliant lighting? Do you see or hear something after those stages?

I do hear sound that rings my ears. As I lie on my bed, I sometimes feel lonely and empty. Still, I mostly think of the beautiful eyes of STAY and I end up deciding to perform on the stages as always.

This year, Stray Kids will be starting a world tour bigger than ever. What are your resolutions for this year’s world tour?

Since world tour got bigger, I want to show different sides of us. I also want to show everything so that I won’t regret later. I will quench my thirst for the stages and have a wonderful time with STAY. I can’t wait to show our stages (laughs).

If you were to leave a vacation for a month, what would you do?
I want to go on a trip with a map and a music player without telling anyone. I will visit different places with a backpack.
