지금 스트레이 키즈가 세계 무대에서 차지하는 휘황한 존재감과 그 뜨거운 온도를 매거진이 어떻게 담아낼 수 있을까? 퍼포먼스의 멋과 음악적 흥에 있어 언제나 최대치를 향하는 그들의 모습에 걸맞게, <더블유>는 스펙터클한 품으로 스트레이 키즈를 맞이했다. 완전체로 모인 여덟 멤버를 찬찬히 조명하고자 카메라 앞에 각자의 독자적인 무대를 마련한 건 물론이다.
‘빛깔 뻔쩍해, 클래스는 특’이라고 외치던 그들의 자부심처럼, 스트레이 키즈와 매거진이 벌이는 초특급 프로젝트가 뻔쩍하게 막을 올린다.

설렘이라는 아기자기한 말로는 온전히 담아낼 수 없다. 숨이 막힐 정도로 강렬하게 다가오는, 어쩔 도리 없이 사로잡히고야 마는 낯선 사랑의 떨림. 5월 10일 공개된 스트레이 키즈의 디지털 싱글 ‘Lose My Breath’는 그런 감정에 대한 노래다. 인어공주 이야기를 모티프 삼은 것으로 보이는 뮤직비디오에는 물이 자주 등장한다. 바닷속 세상에서 탈출해 왕자가 사는 낯선 땅의 세계로 발 딛고 말았던 인어공주의 갈망, 어쩌면 물거품으로 끝날지도 모르는 운명은 서정적인 ‘Lose My Breath’의 멜로디 그리고 비장미마저 흐르는 곡의 전반적인 분위기와 닮았다.

사실 2018년 3월 데뷔 이래 스트레이 키즈는 물보다 불에 가까운 팀이었다. 당장 떠오르는 미니 6집 의 ‘Maniac’이나 정규 3집 <5-Star>의 ‘특’, 혹은 비교적 최근 활동인 미니 8집 <樂-Star>의 ‘락(樂)’만 해도 그렇다. 신체의 사용과 운동에너지를 최대치로 폭발시키는 퍼포먼스, 화려하고 흥이 넘쳐 불꽃놀이가 벌어지는 듯한 중독적 사운드는 세계 무대에서 스트레이 키즈의 존재감을 진하게 새긴 무기다. 이 그룹의 글로벌한 저력은 팬이 아닌 누군가가 짐작하는 것보다 일찍부터 훨씬 강했다.

이제 스트레이 키즈는 여름 컴백을 앞두고 지난 6년 동안 보여준 스타일과는 꽤 다른 ‘Lose My Breath’로 조금은 분위기를 전환한다. 그룹 내 프로듀싱 팀인 쓰리라차, 그리고 보컬과 작곡에서 유니크한 영역을 구축한 찰리 푸스가 협업한 ‘영어’ 싱글이라는 점에서 이미 기존과는 다른 설정의 음악이기도 하다. 지난해 MTV 비디오 뮤직 어워드(VMA)와 롤라팔루자 파리 등에서 공연했던 황홀한 경험치는 올해의 뮤직 페스티벌과 월드 투어 여정에서 빛을 발할 것이다. 스트레이 키즈라는 음악과 함께 머무르는 한, 우리는 불의 뜨거움과 물의 유려함을 모두 누릴 수 있지 않을까?

To spotlight the eight members who gathered as a whole group, <W> also prepared individual stages for each member in front of the camera. Just as their confidence in the lyrics, “Flashy, We’re S-Class,” W Magazine and Stray Kids kick off a super-scale flashy project.

A simple word, “excitement,” cannot fully express the feeling. The digital single, “Lose My Breath,” released on May 10, 2024, sings about an unfamiliar excitement of love that inevitably captivates you breathtakingly. The music video seems to be inspired by the story of The Little Mermaid, and you can frequently find scenes with water. With her aspiration, a mermaid princess escapes from underwater world and steps on an unfamiliar world where the prince lives. Her fate might end up turning into sea foam. Her aspiration and fate are reflected on the lyrical melodies and resolute vibes of “Lose My Breath.” Since their debut in March 2018, Stray Kids have been more like fire than water.

Think of “Maniac” in 6th mini album <Oddinary>, “S-Class” in the 3rd full album <5-Star>, and recently released “LALALA” in the 8th mini album <樂-Star>. Their performances maximize the use of their bodies and kinetic energy, and their fancy, exciting, and addictive sound burst like fireworks. In upcoming summer comeback, Stray Kids shifts their vibes with “Lose My Breath,” which is quite different from the music styles they have shown over the last six years. “Lose My Breath” is also differentiated from previous songs of Stray Kids because it is an “English” single album made in collaboration between the group’s producing team, 3RACHA, and Charlie Puth, who built own uniqueness in vocal and composition fields.

The experience of performing in the MTV Video Music Award (VMA) and Lollapalooza Paris last year will make Stray Kids shine more in this year’s music festival and world tour.
