[ENG] NCT 텐에게 온 첫 번째 기회

NCT라는 큰 이름 안에서 몇몇 팀을 오가며 여러 겹으로 사는 멤버들에게, 솔로 앨범은 또 다른 차원의 소중한 기회다. 도전을 즐기는 텐에게 그 첫 번째 기회가 왔다.

연말 <가요대전> 생방송 때 리프트 아래로 떨어지는 사고가 있었죠. 팬들에게 괜찮으니 걱정하지 말라는 메시지 남겼다고 들었어요. 그런데, 정말 괜찮아요?
네, 정말요. 다음 날쯤 되면 몸이 아플 줄 알았는데 괜찮더라고요. 이래서 평소에 스트레칭을 열심히 해두는 게 중요합니다!

다행이네요. 우리 화보 사진, 멋지게 잘 나올 것 같아요. 오늘 어떤 무드였어요?
런던 보이?(웃음) 한강을 바로 앞에 두고 촬영했잖아요. 날씨 때문인지 런던에 있는 것처럼 느껴졌어요.

NCT U, 슈퍼엠, WayV를 오가며 살다가 오는 2월에 드디어 첫 솔로 앨범을 내요. 지금껏 솔로 음원을 네 번 발표했지만, 본격 활동까지 하는 앨범의 의미는 더 클 거예요. 요즘 느낌이 어때요?
좀 두려운 마음도 솔직히 있어요. 제 기대감과 팬들의 기대감이라는 것도 있지만, 무엇보다 제가 전과는 다른 모습을 보여주고 싶다는 부담감이 커서요. 예전에 솔로곡을 발표했을 때와 어떻게 다르게 갈 수 있는지 고민을 많이 해요.

특히 더 끌리는 스타일은 있던가요?
그게 진짜 어려운 문제예요. 왜냐면 저는 좋아하는 게 많거든요. 음악 장르도 그렇고요. 수록곡마다 장르가 다를 거예요. 힙합도 있고, 팝도, R&B도 있고 다양해요. 그것들을 다 다른 방식으로 불렀으니, 제 새로운 보컬 스타일에 관심 가져주시면 좋겠어요. ‘다양한 창법을 가지고 있는 아티스트구나’ 알게 되신다면 기쁠 거예요.

좋아하는 것과 잘하는 것이 있거든요. 그 두 가지가 일치하면 아주 행복한 경우죠.
저는 도전하는 스타일이에요. 도전 자체를 즐기니까 뭔가를 선택할 때도 ‘이거 내가 잘할 수 있을까?’ 싶으면 ‘그냥 한번 열심히 해보자’ 이렇게 돼요.

혹시 이런 말을 아나요? ‘열심히 하지 말고, 잘해야 해.’ 무서운 말이긴 해요.
저는 이렇게 얘기합니다. ‘열심히 즐겁게 하겠습니다.’

스트레스를 잘 안 받는 편인가요?
아니에요, 많이 받아요. 그 대신 빨리 털어내요. 예전에는 스트레스를 계속 붙잡고 있는 성격이었거든요. 그런데 이젠 스트레스를 받는 상황이다 싶으면 ‘오케이. 뭐, 그럴 수 있지’ 이래요.

스트레스를 빨리 털어버리는 데 도움 되는 것이 있나요?
제가 그걸 좋아해요. ‘쿼트’를 뭐라고 하죠? 그, 짧지만 좋은 말들 있잖아요. 그런 거 보면 잘 캡처하고, 저장해두고 그래요. 예를 들면 들어오는 것은 들어오는 대로 받아들이고, 가는 거 잡지 말아라?

네, 영어로 얘기해도 괜찮아요.
‘If It Comes, Let It Come. If It Stays, Let It Stay. If It Goes, Let It Go.’

그렇게만 살 수 있으면 얼마나 좋을까요?
하하. 그래도 이런 좋은 말을 보는 게 어느 정도는 정말 도움이 돼요.

작년 8월 NCT 4집 <골든 에이지>가 나왔을 때 NCT U 멤버들과 ‘배기 진스’로 활동했죠. 멤버들이 그 곡의 데모를 처음 들은 순간 ‘이거다’ 하고 즉각 반응하는 모습을 유튜브로 봤어요. 그때처럼, 데모 버전을 처음 들었을 때 느낌이 확 온 곡이 또 있나요?
네! ‘배기 진스’ 외에는 솔로 음원으로 발표한 ‘페인트 미 네이키드’요. 그 당시의 제가 딱 하고 싶고, 보여주고 싶었던 느낌의 곡이었죠. 그리고 또 뭐가 있더라… WayV 첫 앨범의 ‘테이크 오프’도 그랬던 것 같아요.

WayV는 지난 11월에 2집 <온 마이 유스>를 냈어요. 타이틀곡이 드라마틱하고 비장미마저 있어 꽤 멋지더군요. 철없던 젊은 시절에 놓친 사랑을 회상하는 내용이라니, 멤버들보다 훨씬 나이 많은 화자가 부를 법하다고 느껴지기도 했어요.
맞아요, 그래서 저희도 녹음할 때 정말 힘들었어요. 감정에 몰입해야 하는데, 그 감정을 찾아야 하는 거 자체가 어려웠어요.

그런 경우, 곡에 필요한 감정에 이입하기 위한 첫 번째 관문은 가사를 붙들고 제대로 이해하거나 느껴보려는 일인가요?
저는 바이브를 먼저 생각해요. 곡의 인스트루먼트를 가지고서 이 곡의 전반적인 느낌이 어떤가 보는 거죠. 그거에 따라 ‘노래 부를 땐 이런 목소리로 해야지’, ‘이 단어들에 악센트를 좀 줘야겠다’ 하는 식이에요.

춤에 대해선 어떻게 접근하는지 궁금해요.
춤은 연기 같다고 생각해요. 일단 음악 그대로에 몰입하면, 음악에 따라 어떤 캐릭터가 잡혀요. 그러면서 춤을 출 때 그 캐릭터다운 또 다른 성격이나 표정이 나오는 거죠. 이번에는 무대에서 힘들게 소화해야 하는 꽉 찬 안무가 아니라 좀 덜어내고 여유 있는 느낌으로 가보려고 해요. 안무 요소가 많고 화려하면 물론 멋지지만, 사람보다 안무가 먼저 보이기도 하거든요. 이번 솔로 활동 때는 텐이라는 사람이 먼저 보이길 바라요. 그다음으로 나머지 요소가 꾸며지는 거죠.

얼마 전 뱀뱀이 운영하는 유튜브 채널 <뱀집>에 출연해서 그랬죠, 일에 관한 문제를 제외하고는 귀찮은 편이라 음식 주문할 때도 늘 시키던 메뉴 시키는 식으로 심플하게 산다고. 일을 대할 때와 그러지 않을 때 온도차가 큰 사람인가요?
네. 일에 대해선 진지해요. 제가 일을 할 때는 아이디어나 비법이 곧잘 생기는데, 데일리 라이프에 있어선 많이 부족한 사람이네요.

혹시 이 일이 아니라 다른 일을 하고 있어도 텐은 그랬을 사람일까요?
그런 것 같아요. 저는 사소하고 소소한 일상생활은 많이 놓치는 듯한 느낌이 있어요. 집에서도 주로 가만히 있고, 레이지하게 시간을 보내는 편이에요. 요리 같은 건, 음, 아마 절대 안 하겠죠?

도영 씨가 말했잖아요, 텐은 아직도 정말 연습을 열심히 해서 놀랐다고. 해야 하는 거니까 책임감으로 하나요, 본인이 즐기고 좋아서 하나요?
둘 다예요. 우선, 모든 뮤직비디오나 무대는 영상으로 다 기록이 남잖아요. 저는 시간이 흘러서라도 제가 과거에 뭔가를 못하는 모습을 보고 싶지가 않아요. 아직 완벽하지 않기 때문에 ‘완벽하게 해보자’라는 생각으로 열심히 하는 거죠. 그리고 이젠 그렇게 하는 게 습관이 되기도 했어요. 제대로 최선을 다하지 못하면 찝찝한 느낌이 남거든요. 물론 지난 무대를 다시 보면서 ‘좋네’ 할 때보다 ‘좀 아쉽네’ 할 때가 더 많기는 해요. 그런데 어쩔 수 없죠. 그 모습 또한 과거의 저예요.

열일곱 즈음 태국에서 한국으로 왔습니다. 지금 돌이켜보면 연습생 시절의 텐은 어땠나요? 힘든 기억이 클지, 힘들었지만 앞만 보고 매진하면서 시간이 흘렀을지.
새벽 네다섯 시까지 연습하고 그랬죠. 그때는 다른 것보다 그저 데뷔만 하자는 생각이 컸어요. 그런데 연습생 생활을 거치면서 크게 배운 게 있어요. 책임감, 그리고 정말 열심히 노력하면 이룰 수 있다는 거요. ‘열심히 해보면 다 되더라’ 하는 마인드는 지금도 갖고 있어요.

연습은 거짓말하지 않는다’ 같은 말, 여러 K팝 아티스트들에게서 들었습니다.
그 말은 진짜예요. 그런데 똑똑하게 연습해야 합니다. 그냥 무조건 계속 반복하는 게 아니라 자신을 ‘옵저브’ 하면서 연습해야 해요. 관찰이라고 하나요? 스스로 자기 단점을 볼 줄 알아야 실력이 늘어나요. 저는 그렇게 생각합니다.

훌륭한 아티스트가 태어나는 데 재능과 노력 중 노력의 비중이 훨씬 크다고 생각하세요?
네. 저는 노력하고 연습하지 않으면 어떻게 ‘지니어스’가 될 수 있는지 모르겠어요. 천재가 아니어도 계속해서 노력하면 해낼 수 있지 않아요? 노력이 중요해요. 노력해야 새로운 것도 얻죠. 세상은 빨리 바뀌고 있으니까요.

재능이 없으면 노력해도 안 되지 않을까요?
돼요(웃음). 저는 그렇게 믿어요. 그런데 자신에게 맞는 방법으로 노력해야죠.

문득 이런 생각이 드네요. SM엔터테인먼트는 여러모로 훌륭한 회사죠. 여기서 꿈을 키운 이들은 K팝 아티스트에게 필요한 각 분야의 전문적인 구성원과 함께하면서, 또 치열하게 경쟁해야 하지만 그 좋은 환경 속에서 탁월하게 성장해간 다른 아티스트들을 자연스레 보면서 자랐을 거예요. 무엇보다 텐 본인도 그 성장의 경험을 했기 때문에 그런 믿음을 갖게 된 걸 수도 있을 것 같아요.
그래서 주변 사람이 정말 중요하다고 생각해요. 좋은 사람과 있으면, 좋은 조언을 얻게 돼요. 저는 우리 비주얼 팀과 매니저 누나, 형부터 회사에 계시는 많은 사람과 얘기하고 나누는 걸 좋아해요. 혼자서만 생각하는 것보다 같이 얘기하면서 나오는 아이디어가 좋을 때가 더 많아요. 요즘도 앨범을 만들고 있을 때니까 대화를 많이 하고요.

연습생 시절의 텐에게 지금의 텐은 뭐라고 말해주겠어요?
‘지금 네가 생각하는 게 맞아. 그렇게 계속하는 게 맞아, 진정으로 꿈을 갖고 있다면. 그런데 춤 연습을 하는 거만큼 노래 연습도 좀 했으면 좋겠다.’(웃음)

텐은 그 시절에도 무언가를 의심하지 않고 옳게 살았다는 말 같아요. 스스로 생각해도 마음에 드는 자신의 기질이 있나요? 기질이라는 게요, 그러니까….
‘기질이’가 뭐예요?

성격이요. 텐이 타고난 성격 중에서 마음에 드는 면을 하나 말해줄 수 있어요?
오, 이거 진짜 어렵다! 저는 ‘내가 어떻구나’ 하는 식으로 정해두려고 하진 않거든요. 사람은 시간이 흐르면서 성격이 바뀌기도 하니까요. 생각해보자면, 음… 뭔가 마음을 정하면 포기하지 않고 끝까지 갈 수 있다는 점이요. 제가 그런 성격 같아요.

그럼 텐이 잘 끌리고 좋아하게 되는 사람은 어떤 타입 같아요?
밝은 사람이 좋아요. 말 잘하는 사람, 또 나를 이끌어줄 수 있는 사람도. 예를 들면 저는 ‘이거 해보자, 이렇게 해보자’ 하는 사람을 좋아해요.

어떤 경우에 화가 많이 나죠?
예의 없는 거요. 예의는 아주 중요하다고 생각합니다.

이즈음에서 사람들에게 전달하고 싶은 중요한 정보가 있네요. 텐은 2011년 태국에서 방송된 한 오디션 프로그램에서 우승을 차지한 주인공이죠. 그리고 또 하나, ‘샤이니의 키가 예뻐하는 동생 TOP 3’에 든 사람입니다!
하하하, 맞아요!

감 있고 보는 눈 좋은 키가 예뻐할 때는 다 이유가 있겠죠. 그는 텐이 노력하는 자세를 알아봤나 봅니다.
음, 형한테 왜 저를 잘 봐주는지 물어본 적은 없는데요. 형이 저를 많이 챙겨주셨어요. 제가 부상당한 적이 있는데, 그때도 고생했다면서 시간 있으면 같이 밥 먹자고 챙겨주시고.

키가 <가솔린>으로 인터뷰할 때 그랬어요. ‘불행 3을 겪어야 행복 7이 온다, 때로는 내 행복감과 무언가를 교환해야 할 때가 있다, 연습하는 게 싫다고 안 하면 그만큼 잃는 게 생기니까 몸을 움직여야 한다’라고. 당연한 이야기 같지만, 합리적인 사고방식이 밴 프로라는 게 느껴졌죠.
저도요, 아무것도 안 하면 왠지 이상하고 찝찝한 기분일 때가 많아요. 그래서 집에 가만히 있다가도 갑자기 ‘언어 공부 해야겠다’ 하면서 움직여요. 일과 연결시킬 수 있는 거라면 기꺼이 다 해요. 꼭 음악이나 무대와 직접적인 관련이 있는 게 아니라도요. 물론 시간이 되는 한에서요.

아까 집에 있으면 레이지하게 보낸다더니… 역시, 성실하게 사는 사람이었군요(웃음).
성실한가? 그냥 그것도 습관화된 면 같아요. 그렇게 안하면 감각을 잃어버릴 것 같은 느낌이 들어요.

태국어뿐 아니라 영어와 중국어까지 편안하게 하고, 일본어도 좀 하죠? 그래서 요즘엔 어떤 언어를 공부하는데요?
곧 솔로 앨범을 내니까 한국에서 활동을 많이, 열심히 하고 싶어서 요새 한국 예능 프로그램을 잘 봐요. 그리고 뉴스 기사도 잘 읽어보고 그래요. 말을 더 잘하고 싶은데, 긴장하면 또 잘 안 돼요.

앨범으로 사람들을 놀라게 할 준비는 되었나요?
놀라게 한다기보다는, 제 앨범으로 저는 이렇게 말하는 거예요. “이게 나다.” 아니 정확히는 “이게 ‘지금의’ 나다.” 그러니까, 곧 제가 나오면 한번 보세요(웃음). 바로 지금의 텐입니다.

For members who live in multiple layers across several teams under the name of NCT, a solo album is a precious opportunity on another level. First chance came to Ten, who enjoys challenges.

W Korea) During 2023 Gayo Daejeon, you fell off from a lift. I heard you left a message to fans saying you’re okay. Were you really okay then?
Yes, I was totally fine. I thought I’d feel sore the next day but I was fine. That’s why it’s so important to stretch your body every day!

That’s good to hear. I’m sure your editorial photographs will be great. Could you explain today’s mood?
London boy? The editorial shoot was taken right in front of Han River and it was so cold. It felt like I was in London.

After moving between NCT U, Super M, and WayV, and your first solo album will be released on upcoming February. You released solo albums four times but it would be meaningful to expand your solo activities. How do you feel these days?
To be honest, I’m a little scared. In addition to my own expectation and expectation of fans, I feel a huge pressure to show a different side of me. I think a lot about how I can go differently than the previous solo songs.

Do you have a particular preference?
That’s a really a tough question because there are so many things I love. I also love various music genres, too. So, each track will be in different music genres, such as hip-hop, pop, and R&B. I sang all these genres in different styles, and I hope you could focus on my new vocal style. It would be great if you could notice and think, ‘oh, he is an artist who can sing in various ways.”

People say there are things you like and things you love. If both are the same, you’re very lucky.
I am a challenge seeker and I enjoy challenge itself. When I have to make a choice but not sure whether I can do it, I just tell myself, “let’s just try my best.”

Do you know this saying? “Don’t work hard. Try to do well.” It sounds a bit scary.
I’d say, “I work hard and enjoy it.”

Do you think you feel less stress?
No, I often get stressed a lot, but I can overcome stress quickly. In the past, I put stress on myself without letting them go away. Now, whenever I feel stressed, I just think, “okay, things can happen.”

Is there anything that helps you relieve stress more quickly?
I love reading quotes. How do you say “Quote” in Korean? There are many good short quotes, and I capture and save them. For example, there is a quote about accepting and letting things go. I don’t know how to say that in Korean.

Yes, you can say it in English.

I wish I could like a life like that.
Haha, Reading these kinds of quotes help me a lot when I’m stressed.

When NCT released 4th album, Golden Age, last August, “Baggy Jeans” featured you and NCT U members. I saw your reaction video of demo version, and you immediately said “This is it.” Is there any song that caught your ears when you heard the demo version for the first time?
Sure! My solo song, Paint Me Naked, immediately caught my ears just like Baggy Jeans. It was the type of song that I really wanted to try and show. Let me think… I also got the same feeling when I heard Take Off of WayV’s first album for the first time.

WayV released the 2nd album, On My Youth, last November. The title track was dramatic and powerful. The lyrics narrate the regrets and mistakes made in youth, and I thought the song’s narrator would be much older than the actual members.
You’re right, and it was really hard for us to record that song. We had to immerse into emotion, but it was hard to find that emotion.

If you have hard time immersing into the emotion for the song, do you start from understanding and feeling the lyrics?
I think about the vibe of the song first. So, I pay attention to the song’s instrument to catch what the song feels like. This helps me move on to the voice tone of the song and accent of the words.

Then, how do you approach dances?
To me, dancing is like acting. Once you immerse into the music, you get an idea of character for the music. So, I express different personalities and facial expressions for that character as I dance. In the new stage, I won’t fill up the whole stage with complex choreography. Instead, I will show more relaxing feeling. When you put more choreography elements, the stage would look cool but choreography might stand out more than the performer. In the solo activities, I want to make myself stand out the most, and other elements come after that.

Recently, you appeared on BamBam’s YouTube channel and said that you live a simple life and that you always order the same menu because you feel tired about things aside from work. Do you change a lot when it comes to work?
Yes, I’m serious about my work. I’m usually full of ideas and thoughts when I work, but I still need to work on my daily life.

Would you be the same type of person even if you had a different job?
I guess so. I miss out a lot of small and mundane moments of my life. I usually do nothing at home and I get so lazy when I spend my personal time. I think I will never try things such as cooking.

Doyoung said that he was surprised because you still practice hard. Is that because of responsibility or do you actually enjoy your work?
I’d say both. All music videos and stages remain as records. When I watch them again years later, I don’t want to think, ‘Oh, I was so bad at that time.’ I am not perfect yet, and I try my best to show my best performance. Now, this has become a habit for me. I feel uneasy when I didn’t try my best. Of course, when I look back at my past stages, there are more moments of ‘I could have done better’ than ‘that was good.’ But it can’t be helped because it is still me.

You came from Thailand to Korea when you were around 17. Looking back now, how was your life as a trainee? Was it tough? Or did you simply focus on training?
There were a lot of competitions, and I had to practice every day until 4 to 5 o’clock in the morning. At that time, I only thought about my debut. After being a trainee, I learned huge lessons. First is responsibility and second is that dreams come true after hard work. I still keep these lessons, and I always tell myself, ‘just work hard and everything will be okay.”

In fact, a lot of K-pop artists said “practice never betrays you.”
I totally agree with that, but you have to practice smartly. Instead of just repeating again and again, you have to observe yourself as you practice. You have to be able to your own weakness to get better. This is what I think.

To become a great artist, which would be more important? Talent or effort?
I don’t know how you can become a ‘genius’ without effort and practice. Even if you aren’t a genius, you can achieve it by keep working on it. It’s all about effort. You have to make efforts to obtain new things because the world is changing so fast.

What if you don’t have any talent? Is effort still important?
Yes, that’s what I believe. Still, you have to do it in the way that works for you.

I suddenly got an idea. SM Entertainment is an amazing company in various ways. Trainees who grew their dreams in SM Entertainment get a chance to work with professionals required for K-pop artists. They also compete fiercely but also grow up as they watch other artists who made achievements in such a good environment. Above all, you also had an opportunity to grow like that. That may be the reason why you believe in efforts.
That’s why people around you are really important. When you are around good people, you get good advices. I love talking to our visual team members, our managers, and many other people who work at our company. I get more creative ideas when I discuss with other people rather than thinking alone. I also discussed with a lot of people in the company while making my new album.

What would you say to your trainee self?
I’d say, “you are not wrong. Keep doing what you are doing, if you really want it. But you gotta practice singing as much as you practice dancing.”

It sounds you were on the right path without doubting even when you were a trainee. Do you like your temperament? Hmm, how should I describe this…
What’s temperament?

A personality. Among your personalities, what’s your favorite personality?
Oh, this one is hard. I don’t define my personality as a certain type of person. I think personality can change over time. If I have to choose my favorite personality, I like how I push ahead without giving up once I make up my mind. I’m that kind of person.

Then, what type of person do you get attracted to?
I like people with bright personality, people with good communication skills, and people who can lead me. For example, I like people who make a lot of suggestions.

When do you get angry?
When someone is impolite. Good manner is really important.

There’s something important I have to tell our readers. Ten won the Thai audition program in 2011 and he is also one of SHINee Key’s Top 3 favorite brothers!
Haha, you’re right!

Key has a great discerning eye, and there must be reason why he likes you. I think Ten recognized your hard work.
Hmm, I never asked Key why he is so nice to me, but he took care of me all the time. I once got injured, and he called me to make sure I was okay and asked me out for a meal.

In an interview after releasing Gasoline, Key said “great happiness only come after small sadness and there are moments you have to exchange your happiness with something else. So, I keep moving because I might end up losing something if I don’t practice.” It sounds obvious but I could see his professional attitude with logical thinking.
I agree with him. I feel awkward and uncomfortable when I do nothing. If I have time, I am willing to do anything and it doesn’t have to be music or stage, as long as it is related to work.

You earlier said you get lazy at home… As I expected, you are a hardworking person.
Am I? I think working hard became a habit to me. I feel like I might lose my senses if I don’t.

You are good at Thai, English, Chinese, and a bit of Japanese, right? What language are you studying these days?
I will be releasing a solo album soon, and I want to involve myself in various activities in Korea. So, I often watch Korean variety shows and news articles these days. I want to speak Korean more fluently, but I can’t especially when I get nervous.

Are you ready to surprise the world with your album?
Instead of surprising people, I want to express “myself” and show “myself now” in my new album. So, please check out my new album when it gets released, and you will see how “Ten” is now.
