펜디와 베르사체의 이례적 스왑 ‘펜다체’ 컬렉션만큼이나 화제가 됐던 펜디의 새 앰배서더 지코. 이제 음악을 포함한 지코의 세상에 ‘OG 중의 OG’ 펜디가 들어왔다.

<W Korea> 펜디의 앰배서더로 선정된 걸 축하해요. 지코와 패션은 뗄 수 없잖아요. 펜디에 대해 평소 어떤 인상과 느낌을 갖고 있었는지궁금해요.

지코 펜디는 ‘하이엔드’ 하면 자연스럽게 떠오르는 상징적인 브랜드예요. 외국 힙합이나 국내 힙합 가릴 거 없이 아웃핏을 과시하는 래퍼들의 가사 속에 펜디가 빠지는 경우는 드물거든요. 어렸을 때부터 선망하는 게 자연스러웠던 OG 중의 OG 브랜드라 할 수 있어요. 제가 그런 브랜드의 앰배서더가 됐으니, 동경하던 선배 아티스트의 러브콜을 받은 것처럼 짜릿한 쾌감을 느껴요.

아무래도 패션 트렌드에 민감하죠? 혹시 옷방에 있는 아이템 중에서 가장 오래된 건 뭐예요? 시간이 꽤 흘렀는데도 버리거나 처분하지 않고 가지고 있는 아이템요.

2018년인가 미국 투어를 했을 때, 할리우드에서 오버핏의 집업 후디를 컬러별로 구매했어요. 그걸 아직도 잘 입어요. 세월을 탈수록 리폼한 것마냥 워싱 효과가 생겨서 두고두고 입는 재미가 있더라고요.

화보 촬영할 때 지코가 잘 취하는 포즈나 표정이 있어요?

데뷔 초에 제가 표정을 잘 짓는 노하우가 없어서 무턱대고 얼굴을 찡그렸는데, 그게 어느새 제 시그너처가 됐어요. 포즈는 따로 연구하기보다는 착장에 어울리는 무드를 즉흥적으로 반영하곤 해요.

사실 지금 지코한테 제일 궁금한 건 지난 20개월 정도의 시간을 어떻게 보냈을까 하는 점이에요. 2020년 7월 세 번째 EP <랜덤 박스>를 발표했죠. 그러고는 이제야 다시 지코 얼굴을 보네요.

입대하기 전에 컨디션이 썩 좋은 편은 아니었어요. 제 목표이자 동력은 늘 ‘예상을 깨트리는 결과물을 내자’인데, 언젠가부터 창의력이나 총명함이 제 기대치에 못 미쳤어요. 머릿속 불필요한 데이터를 모조리 삭제하고 시스템을 종료하고 싶다는 생각이 간절했을 때, 마침 입영 통지서가 날아왔어요. 1년 9개월 동안 창작에 대한 책임으로부터 한발 뒤로 물러나 머릿속을 깔끔히 게워내는 데 주력했어요.

2019년 가을 첫 정규앨범 <Thinking>을 낼 무렵 <더블유> 인터뷰를 다시 보니, 그즈음 음악을 대하는 태도나 심경에 변화가 좀 있었던 것 같아요.

그래요? 얘기 듣고 보니 저도 그때의 나를 인터뷰해보고 싶네요. 아마 저 자신을 돌봐주고 싶었던 때라 외면보다 내면의 이야기를 꺼내는 데 치중해서 그런 게 아니었을까요.

그럼 그때는 그때이고, 요즘 지코의 머릿속을 가장 크게 사로잡고 있는 화두는 뭔데요?

‘시대상’요. ‘시대를 앞서가려면 모름지기 내가 어느 시대에 사는지부터 좀 알자’, 뭐 이런 의미로. 5년, 길게 잡으면 10년꼴로 바뀌던 시대상이 이제는 매해 빠르게 변화하고 있어요. 사회, 과학, 정치, 경제, 문화 등등은 언뜻 결이 다른 듯 보이지만, 사실은 각 분야가 서로 밀접하게 연계되어 서로 영향을 주고받잖아요.

시대상! 정치나 사회 여러 분야의 뉴스도 챙겨 보는 편이에요?

포털사이트에 들어가면 무의식적으로 뉴스부터 훑어요. 그렇지만 모든 소식을 꿰고 있지는 않아요.

그래서 지코가 바라보는 지금 시대의 핵심은 뭐예요? 그게 가까운 미래에 발표할 음악의 주제인가요?

더 이상은… 기밀입니다. 이미 어느 정도 힌트를 드렸어요.

사상 말고 취향 면에서 요즘 꽂혀 있는 건 뭔가요?

<주술회전>, 미드센추리 모던, 광고요. 저는 창작의 최종 단계가 마케팅이라 생각하기 때문에 자연스럽게 광고에도 관심 갖게 된 듯해요. 꽂혀 있다기보다 ‘이거 없으면 못 산다’ 싶은 아이템은 여전히 물티슈고요(웃음).

지코도 미드센추리 모던 스타일에 빠졌군요? 소유한 아이템 중 특히 아끼는 것이나 언젠가 갖고 싶은 게 있다면요?

소장품으로는 조지 나카시마의 다이닝 테이블 체어 세트, 조지 넬슨의 모듈러 소파, 코코넛 체어, 선버스트 클락, 아르네 보데르의 사이드보드, 에이드리언 피어솔의 라운드 체어와 커피 테이블, 세르주 무이 스탠드 등등을 가지고 있어요. 구매하길 희망하는 작품은 샤를로트 페리앙의 월 유닛이에요. 저는 ‘리프로덕션’보다 ‘오리지널 빈티지’를 선호합니다.

와, 컬렉션이 대단해요. 지코 씨는 유무형의 것에 두루 호기심이 왕성한 사람 같아요. 책을 즐겨 읽는다고 종종 밝히기도 했죠. 재작년 하반기부터 최근까지 읽은 책은 몇 권이나 될까요?

대략 20권쯤? 신간도 읽긴 했지만, 예전에 본 책인데 줄거리가 잘 기억나지 않는 것들 위주로 다시 읽었어요.

평균 한 달에 한 권은 꼬박꼬박 읽은 셈이네요. 혹시 기억해두려고 메모장에 옮겨놓은 인상적인 문장 좀 있나요?

‘지금 나의 죽음에 눈물 흘리는 그대여, 당신이 떨어뜨린 눈물이 사후의 내가 받는 선물이다. 당신이 헐떡이는 숨소리가 내가 아는 유일한 선율이다. 울지 마라. 간략해지는 계절 사이에서도 꼭 살아남아라. 이제 여기 오지 말고. – <이토록 사랑스러운 삶과 연애하기>’. ‘비관주의자는 바람을 탓하고 낙천주의자는 바람의 방향이 바뀌길 기다리며 리더는 바람에 맞춰 돛을 조정한다. – <매일 읽는 맥스웰 리더십>’. 그리고 이건 소설 <달러구트 꿈 백화점>에 나오는 대사예요. “제가 생각하기에… 잠, 그리고 꿈은… 숨 가쁘게 이어지는 직선 같은 삶에, 신께서 공들여 그려 넣은 쉼표인 것 같아요!”

KOZ엔터를 설립한 리더답게 리더십에 관한 책이 빠지지 않는군요(웃음). 음악적으로야 지코는 애초부터 스스로 주도적인 작업을 한 아티스트지만, 새 회사를 차린 후 3년여 동안 음악 외적인 일로 시행착오를 겪었을 것 같아요. 이제는 유의미한 데이터가 좀 쌓였나요?

지코 대표님은 사람을 볼 때 뭘 어떻게 보나요?

신체적, 지적, 정서적, 사회적, 영적… 이런 식으로 카테고리를 나눠 인터뷰해요. 면접자의 답변 내용을 듣고, 떠오르는 호기심을 토대로 즉흥적으로 질문을 던지는 타입입니다. 인재를 보는 안목과 식견은 천천히 늘고 있는 것 같아요.

예비 지원자에게 중요한 팁을 줬네요(웃음). KOZ의 1호 아티스트 다운(Dvwn) 말이에요. 매거진 첫 화보를 <더블유>와 작업했죠. 지코는 까다롭고 기준치가 높은 사람일 텐데, 그런 지코가 인정한 인물이라면… 그의 어떤 면에 끌린 건지 궁금했어요.

저는 제가 할 수 없거나 가지지 못한 ‘무언가’가 있는 사람에게 동물적으로 끌립니다. 다운이의 음악을 듣자마자 ‘이 친구는 모든 장르를 아우를 가능성이 있다’라고 확신이 섰어요. 그리고 그 확신이 틀리지 않았다는 걸 지금까지 가감 없이 보여주고 있고요. 확인하고 싶다면 곧 나올 다운의 신보를 필청해주세요(웃음).

지코가 아티스트일 때, 레이블의 수장일 때, 누군가의 친구 혹은 연인일 때. 각각의 지코는 어떻게 다르거나 얼마나 비슷하죠?

그건 저보다 제 주변인에게 물어봐야 더 정확한 답이 나오겠네요. 아티스트일 때는 진취적, 레이블의 수장일 때는 현실적인 사람 같아요. 친구일 때는 일반적, 가족 또는 연인일 때는 헌신적인 사람이고요.

두루두루 좋은 면은 다 갖췄네요? 일상의 루틴이나 작업 시 루틴이 있나요?

일상은 너무 변칙적이어서 루틴을 잡는 게 힘들더라고요. 작업할 때는 데드라인까지 시간이 넉넉해도 일부러 촉박하게 시일을 잡아놓고 하는 편이에요. 가장 큰 영감은 ‘마감일’이라고 하잖아요(웃음).

5년 전에 올라온 <쇼미더머니 6> 프로듀서 싸이퍼 영상에는 지금도 댓글이 많이 달려요. ‘꽃이 지코서야 봄인 줄 알았다’ 뭐 이런 식으로 지코에 대한 언급이 많고요. 힙합 시장, 혹은 K팝 시장의 변화를 들여다보면 지코에겐 어떤 현상이 보이나요?

K팝 시장은 해를 거듭할수록 파이가 커지고 있어요. 그 추이를 관찰하는 과정에서 제가 목격한 재밌는 현상은, 대중가요로 분류되던 아이돌 음악은 밀도 높은 팬덤 문화가 생기면서 보다 마니아성이 짙어졌고, 마이너 장르로 인식되던 힙합은 어느새 대중과 상당한 친밀감을 형성했다는 점이에요. 이런 새로운 국면에서도 팬덤과 대중 모두를 사로잡은 아티스트들은 정말 대단하다고 생각해요.

2019년 이센스가 <이방인>으로 컴백할 때 이런 말을 했어요. ‘음악이 인생의 전부가 되는것만큼 구린 게 없다’고요. 그러면서 ‘인생이 먼저고 음악이나 일은 다른 문제’라고, 마치 음악이 전부인 사람이 자기 최면을 걸고 다짐하듯이 말했어요. 지코의 경우는 어때요?

음악이 제 삶과 가장 근접한 곳에 있기는 하지만 그렇다고 제 전부는 아니에요. 저도 센스 형이 했던 말과 비슷한 담론을 동료들과 자주 나누곤 해요. 삶이 음악에 저당 잡히는 순간 인생의 모든 결정권을 음악에 내어주는 꼴이 된다고, 음악은 뮤지션을 구원해주기도 하지만 때로는 심판하기도 한다고. 음악을 제외한 저에게 남는 건 음악만 제외한 ‘이 세상 모든 것’이겠죠.

시적이네요. 어떤 뮤지션을 이상적인 뮤지션이라고 생각하나요?

음악을 듣다가 이 음악 ‘누구’ 같다는 말을 할 때가 있잖아요. 그 ‘누구’로 칭해지는 인물이 되는 것이 뮤지션으로서 가장 품위 있는 레거시라고 생각합니다. Ye(카니예 웨스트), 드레이크, 아웃캐스트, 블랙 아이드 피스가 그런 뮤지션이죠.

스웨그니 플렉스니 하는 말도 너무 흔해졌어요. 그런 단어는 결국 누군가의 ‘멋’을 말하기 위해 쓰이죠. 어떤 사람이 진짜 멋진 사람일까요?

‘멋’이라는 말을 자주 하는 사람보다 그 말을 자주 듣는 사람이 진짜 멋있는 사람이라고 생각합니다.

그럼 질투심을 느낄 정도로 탐나는 재능이나 무엇을 가진 인물은 어떤 유형이에요?

국내에서는 페노메코, 해외에서는 토리 레인즈. 저는 단지 ‘싱잉랩’을 잘 구사하는 래퍼가 아닌, 순도 100퍼센트의 보컬로서 그 능력치가 평균 이상인 래퍼를 보면 질투가 나요….

지코도 질투심을 느끼는군요. 가장 두려워하는 게 있다면요?

사람. 사람이 두렵죠.

언더그라운드의 래퍼에서 아이돌로, 아티스트로, 프로듀서로, 또 한 레이블의 대표로 쭉쭉 달려왔습니다. 데뷔 후 지금까지 쌓은 여러 경험을 거쳐 지금 지코에게 남아 있는 중요한 결론이 있다면 뭘까요?

만약 누군가가 저에게 10년 전으로 돌아갈 수 있다면 돌아가겠냐고 물어도, 제 대답은 결코 ‘아니오’예요. 두 번은 경험하고 싶지 않은 무시무시한 시간이었다는 뜻이에요. 저는 그 지난날을 돌파해서 도착한 지금이 썩 마음에 들어요. 일단 최선을 다하고 보면, 그다음엔 귀찮을 일이 없어요. 그리고 그렇게 해야 결과가 좋지 않더라도 마음 놓고 남 탓이 아닌 제 탓을 할 수 있어요.

지금 지코의 모습은 언더에서 랩 하던 시절에 꿈꾸고 바란 대로인가요? 꿈꾸던 그 모습은 이미 훌쩍 넘어섰나요?

훌쩍 넘어선 때가 아마 2020년쯤이었을 거예요. 제 꿈이 소박했나요? 과분했나요?

2020년이라면… 연초부터 ‘아무노래’ 챌린지가 온라인과 오프라인을 강타하기 시작한 때군요 (웃음). 조만간 오랜만에 발표할 음악이 그만큼 히트할 수 있을까요?

고무적이게도 저는 현재 정신과 육신 모두 매우 건강한 상태예요. 소집 해제와 동시에 향후 활동에 관한 모든 구상을 마쳤습니다. 이제 실행에 옮기기만 하면 돼요.

Congratulations on becoming an ambassador of FENDI. You are also known for your fashion. So, could you share your impression and feelings about FENDI?

FENDI is a symbolic “High-End” brand. In Korean and global hip-hop scenes, rappers who brag about outfits always put FENDI in their lyrics. FENDI is the OG brand that everyone has been admiring. I was thrilled to become an ambassador for such brand and it felt like getting offers from the artist I’ve been admiring.

You must be sensitive to fashion trend. What’s the oldest item you have in your wardrobe? Do you have any item you still keep even after long years?

Around 2018, I had world tour in the United States and I brought oversized hoodies in different colors at Hollywood. I still enjoy wearing them because the hoodies got the washed-effect just like the custom hoodies over the years.

Do you have favorite poses or faces for the photoshoots?

When I first debuted, I didn’t have any know how and I just frowned. Then, it became my signature face at some point. I don’t study poses and I try to pose naturally depending on the clothes.

Actually, people must be really curious about what you have been doing over the last 20 months. You released your third EP <Random Box> in July 2020 and we couldn’t see your face for a while.

I was in a bad condition before entering the military service. My goal and motivation always have been to make something that breaks people’s expectation. Then, my creativity or cleverness failed to meet my expectation at some point. I desperately wanted to delete all the unnecessary data inside my brain and shut down. Then, I got a notice of obligation for military service. For 1 year and 9 months of military service, I took a step back from the responsibility of creative works and focused on emptying my head.

You had interview with <W Korea> after releasing the first full-length solo album <Thinking> in fall 2019 and your attitude and thoughts toward music changed around that time.

Really? I wish I could interview myself around that time. Perhaps, I focused on sharing my inner voices rather than answering superficially because I wanted to take care of myself at that time.

Then, what topic interests you the most these days?

I’m interested about “Time” people live in. To be ahead of the time, I want to know about the time I’m living in. Previously, there were significant changes every 5 years or 10 years. These days, however, things are changing really quickly every year. While every sector including society, science, politics, economy, and culture seem different, they are closely related together and they also influence on each other.

Do you often read news about politics and society?

Whenever I look at a website, I quickly read the news unconsciously. I don’t check on every one of them though.

What would be the main point of this generation? Is that the topic for the song you’ll release in the near future?

It’s top secret. I already gave enough hints.

Other than topic you mentioned, what are you interested in these days?

I’m interested in <Jujutsu Kaisen>, mid-century modern, and advertisement. I think marketing is the final step of creative work and I got interested in advertisements. Besides them, I still cannot live without the wet tissues (Laughs).

So, you fell in love with mid-century modern style. Do you have your favorite item or item you want to get someday?

I have Gorge Nakashima’s dining table chair set, Gorge Nelson’s modular sofa, coconut chair, and sunburst clock, Arne Vodder’s sideboard, Adrian Pearsall’s round chair and coffee table, and Serge Mouille’s stands. I hope to buy Charlotte Perriand’s wall units. I personally prefer the original vintage style over reproductions.

That’s really amazing. You also seem to be interested in tangible and intangible things. In other interviews, you mentioned that you enjoy reading. How many books did you read over the last two years?

I read about 20 books. Although I sometimes read new releases, I usually read the books I already read but cannot remember the story.

So, you read one book a month in average. Are there any memorable sentences you wrote down to remember?

“For those who are shedding tears about my death, the tears you shed are the gifts I get after the death. Your rough breathing is the only melody I know. Stay strong against the stream of time and don’t come back here again.” – <Love with Lovable Life>
“The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.” -<The Maxwell Daily Reader>
I also wrote down lines from <Dollargut Dream Department Store>. “In my opinion, sleep and dream are the commas that the god carefully drew on the life with endless straight lines!”

So, you read books about leadership as a leader of KOZ Entertainment. Although you have been leading amazing performance in music, you must have gone through trials and errors after establishing the new label. Could you build up some significant data?

I’m still going through trials and errors. After realizing the importance of communication in business, I hold a regular meeting at least once a week. I’m also involved in recruiting and interview. As CEO, how do you evaluate applicants?

I ask questions in different categories including physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual categories. When the applicant answers these questions, I ask random questions out of my curiosity. I think I’m slowly getting better in examining and evaluating the talents.

Well, that was a great tip for the applicants. Let’s talk about KOZ Entertainment’s first artist, Dvwn. He took his first photoshoots with <W Korea>. You must have strict and high standards and how did you come to work with him? What made you get interested in him?

I instinctively get attracted to people who have “Something” that I don’t have or I couldn’t have. As soon as I heard Dvwn’s music, he proved his potentials in covering the whole genres. He never disappointed me until now. If you want to find out his potentials, please check out his music which will soon come out.

How are you different or similar as the artist, as CEO of label, or as someone’s friend or lover.

Well, you need to ask someone who knows me to get better answers. As an artist, I’m an enterprising person. As a label CEO, I’m a realistic person. I’m also an ordinary person as a friend and a devoted person as family or lover.

You must be a well-rounded person. Do you have any daily routines or work routines?

I don’t have daily routines because of my irregular schedules. When I work, I often work on a very tight schedule even if I have enough days left until the deadline. There is a saying that the ultimate inspiration is the deadline (Laughs).

The producer cypher for <Show Me The Money 6> was uploaded 5 years ago and people who still miss you leave comments about you. Have you noticed any phenomenon in the recent changes in the hip-hop market or K-pop market?

K-pop market is getting bigger and bigger every year. As I observed the progress of change, I noticed that the idol music which was once regarded as the popular is now becoming the music for only few people under the influence of the fandom culture. Meanwhile, hip-hop music was once regarded as the minor genre got much closer to the public. Still, there are amazing artists who successfully captured fandoms and public at the same time.

When E Sense released <The Stranger> in 2019, he commented that it sucks when the music takes the biggest part of your life. He also said that you should put your life before music or job. While E Sense devoted his whole life in music, he is now prioritizing his life more than music. How about you?

Although my life is closely related to music, it doesn’t take up the biggest part of my life. I often discuss with other musicians about what E Sense said. As soon as you devote your life to music, you no longer have the right to make your own decisions. Even though musicians can be saved by music, they can also be judged by the music. If I were to delete music from my life, “Everything Around The World” except music would remain with me.

That was very poetic. How would you define an ideal musician?

When people listen to music, they sometimes say the music style resembles the music of “Someone”. I think the greatest dignity as a musician is to be regarded as that person. Good examples of these musicians are Kanye West, Drake, Outkast, and Black Eyed Peas.

The hip-hop slangs such as “Swag” and “Flex” are commonly used these days and these words show off coolness. Then, how would you describe a cool person?

I think truly cool people don’t say they are cool. You become a truly cool person when others say you are cool.

Are there musicians who have talents or something that make you jealous?

I feel jealous of PENOMECO and Tory Lanez. I always feel jealous of rappers who are purely talented as a vocalist rather than the good singing rappers.

So, you do feel jealous. Then, what are you afraid of the most?

People. I’m afraid of people.

You have been working hard as underground rapper, idol group member, artist, producer, and CEO of label. What is the most important conclusion you made after going through numerous experiences since the debut?

If someone asks me whether I would rewind time and go back 10 years, I would definitely say “No”. It has been tough years and I don’t want to go through those years again. I’m quite satisfied with what I have now after breaking through the past days. Everything will turn out fine once you try your best. Even if the result isn’t satisfactory, you can just blame yourself instead of blaming others.

Have you accomplished the dream you had as an underground rapper? Have you already reached your dream?

I already reached my dream around 2020. Was my dream too small or too big?

In 2020, <Any Song> was trending everywhere including online and offline in the beginning of the year. Do you think your next song will get that popular?

I’m physically and mentally health which is really inspiring. As soon as I completed my military service, I came up with my future plans. Now, all I have to do is to put my plans into action.
